Illegal Substances Suspension Count: 2005
With the new policy of suspensions for illegal substances requiring rather public disclosure, we've decided to keep track for this first season. With our first "victims" on board, we'll start things up.
Players marked with an asterik "*" were in that team's minor league system. Note that Alex Sanchez's positive test occured while he was a member of the Detroit Tigers, but his suspension was announced while he was listed on the Devil Rays major league roster. Same goes for Brian Mallette and Jon Nunnally, and a few others. Players with "released" in their suspension terms had already been released by their major league franchise prior to the announcement of their positive test. Remember, not all of these suspensions are for steroids or illicit compounds; there are prescription drugs that are banned as well.
David Castillo tested positive for a third time since baseball began testing players in 2004, resulting in the 60 day suspension. Minor league players are given 15 day suspensions for the first positive test; major league players 10 days.
